John Smith grew up in Liverpool from where he went to Edinburgh University to study Ecological Science. He stayed in Scotland for 30 years. He was married to Margaret for 32 years until her sudden death. John has two adult children and two grandchildren.
He worked as a Town Planner for 11 years before becoming a minister in Scottish Baptist churches. As president of the Baptist Union of Scotland from 1997-8 he took as his emphasis the motto of Everton Football Club - Only the best is good enough! He was instrumental in the establishment of Evangelical Alliance Scotland and served for over 7 years as UK Director of Evangelical Alliance.
During their time in London John and Margaret were founder members of Royal Docks Community Church, and the associated Bridges Community Project.
In 2006 just six months after his marriage to Ruth, John and Ruth settled in Milton. John believes that when church members are equipped and released to be radical disciples of Jesus Christ 24 hours a day 7 days a week, in the home, the community and the workplace, then 'the local church is the hope of the world'.
His vision is to see church turned inside out to turn the world upside down.
John thinks of himself as a world Christian, having valued greatly overseas travel and fellowship with Christians from many nations.
Having served ten years as a member of the board of Tearfund, he is passionately committed to the concept of Integral Mission which is concerned with transformation at all levels.

EditRev Shaggy Abdon Shortley

Shortley

Originally from the Philippines, Shaggy joined our ministry team as our pastoral worker in January 2007.
Shaggy was brought up in a Roman Catholic family and went to an all-girls school run by nuns. She was actively involved in school-organised visits to the local prisons, hospitals and shanty towns, and enjoyed friendship with a wide range of people.
At 17, a neighbour invited her to a summer youth camp. There, she discovered that it is by grace & faith in Jesus Christ that one can be in true relationship with God and have hope & meaning in life – not by just being a good person.
Shaggy completed a degree in Communications & Creative Writing and initially worked as a part-time TV presenter for the Philippine Children’s Television Foundation. Later on, she became a radio presenter for the Far East Broadcasting Company, which aimed to “bring Christ to the world by radio.” There, she met her husband, Martyn, an Englishman.
After some time of theological training at the London School of Theology and Kings’ College, London, she served as pastoral worker at Harrow Baptist Church in North-West London and was locally accredited by the London Baptist Association to serve as a hospital chaplain. Shaggy is passionate to see individuals transformed by the light & hope that Jesus brings and enable them to shine that light in their home, neighbourhood and workplace.
Shaggy also loves swimming, kayaking and also being lazy at home with a good story to read.
